The JCB Triumph Hurdle is the opening race on the final day of the Cheltenham Festival. It is a 2m1f Grade 1 contest restricted to four-year-old juvenile hurdlers and is the most prestigious race in the jumps season for this category of jumps horses. It has produced four subsequent Champion Hurdle winners in Clair Soleil, Persian War, Kribensis and Katchit, while 2018 and 2019 Grand National winner Tiger Roll triumphed in 2014. Willie Mullins has won each of the last four years, most recently with 100/1 shock Poniros. Check the Triumph Hurdle runners and riders ahead of the race and place your bets by clicking the odds buttons.

Placed only once from 12 starts on the Flat, showing fair form at best; big odds for his three races in the mud over hurdles, appearing to show his best form when fourth of five in Listed race at Naas last time, but that 15l defeat does not suggest any threat to today's principals.

Three Flat runs in Ireland and three over hurdles in Britain; better in this sphere with three minor honours but the best of that form saw him beaten 11l by Minella Study here (good to soft) in December; met some trouble in running that day but not remotely enough to be considered a player now.

1m6f Listed winner on Flat who was sold for 600,000gns later in October; flopped at long odds-on for hurdling debut at Musselburgh last month; brought out just six days later for Grade 2 at Kempton (again good to soft) where he did better, but was weakening when hampered two out; should get the hang of this discipline in due course, but probably too late to feature in this finish.

Ran twice on Flat for Aidan O'Brien; three hurdle races this winter, a never-dangerous 4l fourth to Maestro Conti in Grade 2 Triumph Trial at Cheltenham (soft) on second occasion; first-time cheekpieces in Kelso Grade 2 (good to soft) 13 days ago where a 17l defeat does not augur well for this.

Ordinary maiden on the Flat; won hurdling debut at Tipperary in July, however, and has emerged as a leading juvenile hurdler for new yard with his Listed win at Wetherby (good; overcame a bad late mistake) and Triumph Trial win over C&D (good to soft; by just over 6l from Winston Junior); the latter makes him the highest-rated runner in this from a British stable.

Often front-runner; won his first four hurdle races and placed in three better contests since; gave 2lb when 2l second to Maestro Conti in Grade 2 over C&D on penultimate outing, but the winner left the more positive impression; useful but his limitations are likely to be evident again.

In the first three in his six Flat starts in France, with sole win over 7.5f but also a 1m2f second on final outing; 6-1 and hooded for 12-runner maiden at Naas (heavy) in January, whereas Mon Creuset (blundered two out) was the evens favourite, but this one made all for a 2l win with Tuesday's Festival winner Saratoga in third; those tactics did not seem to be the plan at all, with settling a major issue, yet he found plenty for pressure and it was a promising introduction.

Ran twice on Flat in France and three times in hurdle races at Auteuil, culminating in a win in November (2m2f, heavy); 17-2 and hooded again (but without the tongue-tie) at Leopardstown (2m, heavy) last month in the Grade 1 won by Narciso Has but this filly caught the eye too, held up a detached last before cutting through the field two out and keeping on into second of seven; that makes her one of the form picks in this field, in the absence of Narciso Has, and that was a promising Mullins debut.

Runner-up at Compiegne (2m, very soft) last April and lost out in the final strides when 4-7 in a mares' maiden at Fairyhouse (2m4f, soft) eight weeks ago; looked headstrong in the latter, which soon took her to the lead and she looked certain to win before losing momentum at the final flight, but the winner was beaten 15l in a Listed race next time; strongly run race at this trip may prove a better fit but she has lots to find on the figures.

Promise in his two Irish Flat maidens; justified favouritism in juvenile hurdles at Catterick (good) and Wetherby (soft) and a seven-runner handicap against older horses at Sedgefield (good to soft); won latest with more authority than 2l margin suggests, but this race is a vastly harder task; failed to make the cut for the 4yo handicap here on Tuesday.

Asserted in good style at Auteuil (2m2f, very soft) in September; did so by 2l from stablemate Macho Man on run-in at Fairyhouse (yielding) in January, having helped to dispute the lead; it looks like he'll come up this stiff finish well; also brings an unblemished record but not the best form.

Won smoothly on good to soft at Exeter and Chepstow (Grade 2) on first two hurdle starts, but the latter was only a five-runner race and the market leaders flopped; 9-1 when beaten 13l by Maestro Conti in C&D Grade 2 (soft) seven weeks ago, so would need the ground as a major excuse to have even a squeak in this top race.

Dam half-sister to Gold Cup contender Envoi Allen; easy winner at Punchestown (heavy) and proved much the strongest after the final flight in Listed fillies' event at Newbury (soft) later in November; got loose on the way to the start on her third intended outing but made it a perfect 3-3 record two weeks later when making most to score at Naas (soft to heavy); the challenger she saw off last time was Tuesday's 4yo handicap winner Saratoga and this filly is one of the top two on form in this contest; stays well and should have a big say if the ground is suitable.

Untroubled to win his sole start in France (heavy) and the same at Kempton (good) on British debut; came to the fore in tidy style on run-in for Grade 2 here (soft) seven weeks ago, going past One Horse Town having been short of room and hugged the near-side rail; should have much more to do in this race but it's hard to say just how good he might be.

Flat pedigree, with dam a half-sister to 1m Group/Grade 1 winner Aussie Rules; unraced in that sphere but made 4-5 for 12-runner juvenile hurdle at Cork (2m1f, yielding to soft) in November, making all and seeing off the only serious challenger before left clear; followed that run for John Nallen with a £370,000 sale six days later and brings major promise to this first outing for Mullins, albeit moving from a weak race to the best in the division.

Made most to win a 1m4f bumper at Nantes last October; beaten nearly 9l behind stablemate Kai Lung in maiden hurdle at Naas (heavy) in January but was evens favourite and challenged two out, travelling strongly, only to make a bad mistake; capable of markedly better but it's hard to say how much.

RACING POST TIP

Highland Crystal
Willie Mullins has dominated the Triumph in recent years, in terms of quality and quantity, and could easily do so again, although picking his best hope is far from easy. Proactif is 2-2 and probably a far more straightforward ride than the filly Selma De Vary, but the latter nevertheless has plenty of experience compared to most of these and the big run she delivered on her first appearance for Mullins came in a Grade 1. Kai Lung, Mon Creuset and Macho Man also need plenty of respect among the stable's many runners. A tentative suggestion is that Selma De Vary may prove best of those, but Gordon Elliott's HIGHLAND CRYSTAL also takes high rank in form terms and received a healthy boost in that respect here on Tuesday. She should stay on strongly and will be suited by any rain that's fallen in the last two days. Minella Study and Maestro Conti have place claims among the British.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR - TRIUMPH HURDLE 2025

down

Poniros became the longest-priced winner of the Triumph Hurdle when striking at massive odds of 100-1. Even more remarkably, this was his first start over hurdles. Jonjo O’Neill Jr’s mount was one of 11 runners in the race for Willie Mullins and he finished strongly up the hill to deny Lulamba by a neck. East India Dock was sent off the 5-4 favourite and finished third.
