The Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase (formerly the RSA Chase) takes place at 2.00pm on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival and is the most prestigious race of the jumps season for staying novice chasers. It is the novices’ equivalent of the Cheltenham Gold Cup and several winners have gone on to triumph in the Gold Cup itself in later years, including most recently Denman, Bobs Worth and Lord Windermere.

Fifth in 2023 Albert Bartlett here for David Pipe; finally built on that when second to Kitzbuhel in Kauto Star on Boxing Day (3m, good); needs to improve on that and an abscess meant he missed an engagement at Ascot 25 days ago.

Improved to win a handicap at Thurles ((extended 2m5f, yielding; all wins there) in December; that has worked out but his form is still well off Grade 1 standard and he missed the Dublin Racing Festival due to coughing.

Big improvement on third chase start when beating Slade Steel at Navan (3m, soft to heavy) in January; runner-up had his measure that day before stamina came into it, so it's hard to imagine he is up to this higher level.

Champion Bumper second and Supreme third at last two Cheltenham Festivals; 4-4 over fences, winning three Grade 1s, but raced lazily in Irish Arkle (2m1f, soft) last time which has brought about this hike in trip; possibly the most talented horse in the race, but the trip is a real unknown and the fitting of a hood suggests even his connections have their doubts.

Fifth in last year's Albert Bartlett here and very smart form over fences, winning Grade 2 at Newbury (2m4f, good to soft) in November; easy winner of novice at Ayr (3m, soft) 41 days ago and looks the best of the British hopes, although he may find one or two too good unless he improves again.

Has improved drastically for fences, finishing second to Kitzbuhel on debut before winning at Fairyhouse (2m6f, yielding) and in Grade 1 at Dublin Racing Festival (extended 2m5f, soft; beat Western Fold by just over 4l); impressed with his jumping and how he stuck to his task last time, attributes you need for this race, and he sets the standard on form; leading player.

Sole defeat over hurdles came at this meeting last year (third to The New Lion in the Turners) and lost his undefeated record over fences when just over 12l third to Kaid d'Authie in Grade 1 at the Dublin Racing Festival (extended 2m5f, soft); previous wins were impressive and he's a big player on form but that defeat and the addition of a tongue-tie are concerns.

RACING POST TIP

silk
Kaid d'Authie
If they all line up this would be the biggest field for this race since 2007. The quality is high, too, with seven of the runners having achieved a Racing Post Rating of 155 or higher over fences. Final Demand and Romeo Coolio are huge talents, although neither looks rock-solid coming into this race and solid alternatives abound. Oscars Brother (second choice), Wendigo and Koktail Divin are all contenders, as is Western Fold whose chance would be boosted if the ground stays on the quick side, but the narrow verdict goes to KAID D'AUTHIE, whose win at the Dublin Racing Festival had all the hallmarks of a horse made for this race.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR - BROWN ADVISORY NOVICES CHASE 2025

down

Willie Mullins collected the trophy for the Brown Advisory but not with the horse many expected to win. Mullins saddled four of the seven runners, including the 4-7 favourite Ballyburn, who pulled hard and could only finish fifth. Mullins was successful with the 20-1 chance Lecky Watson, who stayed on well under Sean O’Keeffe to score by four lengths.
