The Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle is a Grade 3 handicap hurdle restricted to four-year-old juvenile hurdlers. It provides trainers with an alternative to the Grade 1 Triumph Hurdle, the other race at the Cheltenham Festival restricted to four-year-old hurdlers. Currently named the McCoys Contractors Juvenile Handicap Hurdle for sponsorship reasons, the race is better known as the Fred Winter, in honor of the legendary trainer.

Has more scope than your typical ex-Flat 4yo and he was a useful maiden in that scene at up to 1m5f; came up short in his first two hurdle races but was unlucky not to be closer to leading Triumph contender Minella Study here in December (good to soft) and then, despite racing freely, won as he liked when a strong favourite at Ascot (soft); made all that day and those tactics can spell danger in a race of this nature, but he should have more to give; Jack Kennedy is a notable booking with the Elliott stable represented.

Six Flat runs for Aidan O'Brien, best form at 1m6f/2m; jumping was ropey in his first two defeats over hurdles but that part of his game improved when a rallying second in a rated hurdle at Naas (soft to heavy) that has delivered four of the last seven winners of this race; probably peaking at the right time when this has all the hallmarks of a long-term plan; seems versatile ground-wise; lots to like.

Won his Flat maiden over 6f but stayed 1m2f; had no problem staying 2m over hurdles when showing significant improvement to win at Cork in early December, keeping on willingly to thwart solid yardstick Ole Ole; it's probably safe to turn a blind eye to his subsequent absence when his trainer has won three of the last seven runnings of this race; there has been money about for him in the last fortnight; Flat profile suggests he may benefit from today's surface (all hurdle runs in the mud).

When all his best form on the Flat and over hurdles is on good ground, it's best to put a line through his run on heavy in a French Grade 1 last time (November); he beat little of note when making hay in minor jumps meetings last summer but barely broke sweat in any of those races and his jumping was pinpoint accurate; one to be interested in for a trainer (also runs Glen To Glen) who knows what's required for this; gelded since his last run.

This dual winner (on good/soft to heavy) has had his limitations laid bare the last twice, though they were classy juveniles he bumped into last time at Fairyhouse and that was probably his best performance (he didn't look out of his comfort zone deep into the race); legendary Irish trainer Jessica Harrington rarely brings one over without a degree of optimism; cheekpieces added.

1m2f French Flat winner; won a maiden hurdle (yielding) in Ireland in October and continued his progress with seconds this winter in a Listed race and Punchestown handicap; even better when winning comfortably on his stable debut at Sandown on Saturday (soft), picking up the penalty that secured his place here; connections strike while the iron is hot and he merits attention, for all that Harry Cobden was aboard at the weekend but not now.

Good Flat horse before embarking on hurdling career and his odds-on defeat to Triumph contender Minella Study at Wetherby in October (Listed; good) doesn't look too shoddy now given the winner's subsequent exploits; appears to have been saved for this since and last month's run on the AW (sixth) should have cleared the pipes; good ground seems his preference but effective on good to soft.

AW winner; turf form on very soft or heavy; badly in with The Mighty Celt on their French clash; it was all very straightforward on his Irish debut at Limerick but he cut little ice in a Grade 1 at the Dublin Racing Festival (18-1); doesn't look a Mullins masterplan and the yard is 0-25 in this race; tongue-tie added.

His French form fills the eye and the experience of six races there will stand him in good stead; underwent wind and gelding operations prior to his debut for Dan Skelton and, with a hood added to regular tongue-tie, he ran on promisingly for third behind Manlaga at Haydock a month ago (soft); it's easy to envisage him finding a fair bit on that form; has raced only on ground ranging from soft to heavy.

Won only one of his 15 Flat races in France but won two of his four hurdle starts at Cagnes-Sur-Mer, both on very soft; this could be some culture shock on his British/handicap hurdle debut and it's worth bearing in mind that stablemate Bad had a similar profile when well beaten in this three years ago at odds of only 5-1.

Won her sole French start, on heavy; both British runs on soft, coming up shy in a Listed race after 315 days off but stylish in quickening away from Pourquoi Pas Papa at Haydock a month ago; could have run in the Triumph but rocks up here with a dangerously unexposed profile.

French Flat winner who has won two of his four races over hurdles but was beaten about 7l in the tougher assignments he's faced; in fairness, his Wetherby win in January (2m, soft) was another step in the right direction but he's probably placed if he's lucky.

Has raced on only soft or heavy ground; progressive form figures and he looked full of beans when accounting for a respected rival with the pair dominant in a maiden at Gowran Park last month; he dictated up front in that slowly run race, so the bare form is perhaps best treated with an element of caution; however, he runs in this instead of the Triumph and it's hard to identify the ceiling of his ability.

One of two runners for a yard that's won this four times; ran to a smart level on the Flat and made a winning start over hurdles, but reality checks have followed in Graded races won by tip-top juvenile Narciso Has; hardly brings momentum into his handicap debut and has a lot of weight; there will be no ground excuses.

Hooded since looking tricky on his debut; the ground was yielding when he displayed a good turn of foot to edge out Ole Ole in a Leopardstown maiden over Christmas and he was too free for his own good when strong in the betting for a Grade 2 here on Trials Day (soft); a combination of the expected good to soft ground and a bigger-field scenario heightens interest in this Flat bred; needs a close look.

Ran only 17 days ago when relinquishing his unbeaten record at the hands of older opposition in the Grade 2 Dovecote at Kempton (good to soft); Nicky Henderson was forced into that commitment to register the requisite third run to qualify here and that defeat was no backward step; light on experience with no Flat background but, like so many in here, he no doubt has better days ahead of him; James Bowen has been aboard for his two British runs.

Beaten four times but significant promise in all of those runs (the first in France), finishing second to Quinta Do Lago, Glen To Glen and Hardy Stuff in his respective Irish maidens; seemed to appreciate the yielding ground last time at Leopardstown (previous runs were in the mud) but he is beginning to look a shade exposed and that never bodes well in this race.

Advanced his form when doing it comfortably at Wincanton (1m7f, heavy) and again in chasing home Manlaga at Haydock (1m7f, soft); couldn't live with the winner (with whom he's 6lb better off) late on but being pestered up front didn't help the cause and he's open to further improvement in a race of this nature on handicap debut; Paul Nicholls has won three of these with recruits from France, where this horse was second last summer.

French bumper winner who created a huge impression on his British debut when unextended at Sandown in December (soft) but his reputation has taken a severe knock after heavy defeats at Chepstow (good to soft) and Haydock (soft; in cheekpieces but not now); his jumping was shoddy on his penultimate run and it's ominous that connections blamed the ground last time, opining that it was drying out; opposable on a few counts.

Runner-up in both his French races and he comfortably reeled in the front-runners to justify market confidence (100-30) on his Irish debut at Fairyhouse (heavy); good to soft ground would be a first but he might well approve of drier conditions as he's not the biggest; trainer's form figures in this race are 146P and there were excuses for the one who pulled up; respected, for all that the handicapper has factored potential into this initial mark.

RACING POST TIP

Hardy Stuff
Saratoga has been the talk of the town for this since finishing second at Naas in a race that has delivered four of the last seven winners and this smacks of a plan. The same could be true of Glen To Glen (second choice) who would appear to have been saved for Cheltenham since winning his maiden in early December. One who might be going under the radar is HARDY STUFF, who overcame traffic issues to beat Ole Ole (previously second to Glen To Glen) in a maiden at Leopardstown over Christmas, and his run here on Trials Day is readily forgiven as he pulled too hard with open spaces ahead of him. This race could suit his style. As always, there are feasible winners all over the shop, with Winston Junior, Harwa, Manlaga and The Mighty Celt all live each-way contenders.

Joseph O’Brien celebrated back-to-back wins in the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle and a third success in the past seven runnings when Puturhandstogether scored under Mark Walsh. The JP McManus-owned four-year-old quickened clear late on to win by six lengths. Stencil, who raced for the same connections and is trained in France, was sent off the 11-4 favourite but finished down the field.
