The Spa Novices' Hurdle, known for sponsorship reasons as the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle, is a Grade 1 race run on day four of the Cheltenham Festival and is the ultimate test for the very best long-distance novice hurdlers, being run over 3m and with 12 hurdles to jump. Since it was first run in 2005, its most successful winner has been Bobs Worth, who went on to win the RSA Chase, now known as the Brown Advisory Chase, at the Cheltenham Festival the following year and the Cheltenham Gold Cup two years later. Near enough a year separated his two runs over hurdles, easily winning the latest when odds-on for a maiden at last year's Galway festival in July (good); light on experience in this scene but he's battle-hardened on the Flat and his third in September's Group 2 Doncaster Cup (2m2f; good to soft) advertises his class and stamina; it's unwise to put a line through him, for all that he's a 9yo.

Excellent third when favourite for the 2024 Champion Bumper here; missed last season but definite signs of getting his act together over hurdles in posting an eyecatching RPR when strolling home at long odds-on in a 2m2f maiden at Naas (soft to heavy; effective on drier ground); unraced beyond an extended 2m4f but might yet prove that stamina is one of his assets; respected.

Pedigree doesn't exactly scream stamina but he did win a 3m point and his trainer believes this race will suit him; all his rules form is at up to 2m3f, over which he beat Doctor Du Mesnil in a small field at Punchestown last time (heavy); doesn't have a lot to find with Thedeviluno on an early-season maiden clash; seems able on all ground; respected.

Record of 3-5 over hurdles; no mare has won this race but few have tried and The Big Westerner was runner-up 12 months ago; however, although a wide-margin winner at Doncaster last time, that was against her own sex and very few in that eight-runner race appeared to handle the conditions; reservations.

This 6yo is a big lad with a bright future ahead of him; it's unlikely that Windsor played to his strengths when well behind Moneygarrow and he then stayed on much the best in a Newbury novice last month (extended 2m4f, soft); however, that latest race had no depth and the odds-on favourite wasn't on his game; this is a huge hike in class.

Point/bumper winner; won easily under no-nonsense rides from the front at Fairyhouse (2m4f, yielding) and Punchestown (2m3f, heavy) and now tackles his toughest test yet with a dangerously unexposed profile; on running style and most definitely on pedigree, the step up to 3m looks a major plus.

Runner-up in a 3m point and ran well in defeat in bumpers at top tracks before selling for £115,000 at the David Maxwell dispersal sale; has looked well above average in justifying market confidence over hurdles at Ludlow (2m5f) and Ascot (extended 2m3f; again on good to soft); Ben Pauling considers him one of his better novices; can't be taken lightly with this longer trip a probable plus.

His bumper form was nothing to shout about but he's gone 3-3 over hurdles; it wasn't a strong Grade 1 he won at the Dublin Racing Festival (2m6f, heavy; won on good) but he bombed clear to win it by some 8l despite taking a firm grip, and his previous defeat of Thedeviluno looks all the better now; there's a nagging concern that his keen-going tendencies might come at a cost in this race, but other than that he's solid.

Should stay okay having won a point over 3m and a Grade 2 at Limerick over just shy of that trip; he's relying on Doctor Steinberg fluffing his lines as he was hammered by him at Leopardstown (2m6f, heavy) on latest start, but has place claims nonetheless.

Has left his bumper form behind over hurdles and completed his hat-trick in a 2m4f Grade 2 here on Trials' Day (first run in a tongue-tie; soft; fine on good); however, that was by the skin of his teeth and in a race that hasn't been that influential when it comes to the Festival; however he fares, he'll be a nice chaser next year.

Winning 3m pointer on slow ground and second in a bumper on yielding; both hurdle runs on soft or heavy; it was a very winnable maiden he was found in November but he then ran quite well in a 2m4f Grade 1 at Naas, surprisingly staying on again for third having raced with the choke out early doors; retains potential, and especially over this trip, provided he settles.

By a Derby winner and there's lots of stamina on the dam's side of his pedigree; unraced beyond 2m2f under rules (did win a 3m point); maiden winner who was turned over at 8-11 last time, but in a messy race won by the classy Sober; he wouldn't be the first horse representing these connections to deliver a clear career best in this race.

3m point winner kept to shorter trips thus far under rules; only his second run over hurdles when a running-on third behind No Drama This End (runner-up is also a class act) in a 2m5f Grade 2 here in November (soft) and perhaps it's best to forgive his odds-on defeat on desperately tiring ground in a maiden at Limerick last time; remains a maiden but so too was Minella Indo who won this race for the same yard in 2019; makes the shortlist.

Beaten in three bumpers for Fergal O'Brien; unbeaten in two hurdles for Willie Mullins and the horse he made light work of at Thurles last time (2m6f, yielding) has since finished second in a big-field Class 2 handicap at Haydock; Paul Townend was highly complimentary about him last time but he still rides Doctor Steinberg; still, this future chaser remains an unknown quantity.

Had one run for Nicky Henderson; 2-2 for current yard, comfortably accounting for a notable rival (fourth in Tuesday's Fred Winter) at Exeter (good to soft) before winning easily again under a penalty at Carlisle (soft); brings a lower profile than many, having taken the back roads to Cheltenham, but he's a dark one; there is stamina in his pedigree, which is just as well when his wins have been at about 2m1f.

0-4 in bumpers but 2-3 over hurdles and wasn't seen to best effect in the defeat, when held up last in a Grade 2 at Navan that Doctor Steinberg dominated up front; it was over 2m that he accounted for the smart Skylight Hustle at Gowran and yet the further he went the better he looked in winning the 3m Grade 2 River Don at Doncaster (soft); his trainer has had horses run well in this before; major player.

Made light work of Thedeviluno in his only bumper (yielding); very nearly won a big-field maiden at Leopardstown over Christmas but he was left for dead by The Passing Wife when odds of 2-5 in a small field at Punchestown (stepped up to 2m3f, heavy); hopes rest on whether this is more his trip, and pedigree offers mixed messages; first-time tongue-tie.

Raced 11 times over hurdles and plenty of experience is never a bad thing in this race; however, he's won only three of those and finished tailed off behind Doctor Steinberg when 40-1 last time; tongue-tie enlisted.

RACING POST TIP

King's Bucks
Experience - and lots of it - was always a big selling point in this race, yet lightly raced horses have joined the party in recent years. It may have been a weak Grade 1 that Doctor Steinberg won at Leopardstown but not many races of that stature are secured with such authority and it's just a question of whether he gives himself a chance of lasting home as he can be too keen for his own good. Spinningayarn's stylish wins over shorter bode well when he's surely a stayer in the making, and the same comment applies to KING'S BUCKS. If forgiven his latest odds-on defeat in a slowly run race on desperately taxing ground, he's entitled to be knocking on the door judged on his highly encouraging run behind No Drama This End here in November. His trainer has won this before with a maiden. Thedeviluno is an assured stayer with every right to be on the shortlist, while Ubatuba appeals as one who could emerge from the shadows and he's the speculative second choice.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR - ALBERT BARTLETT 2025

down

Willie Mullins trained a fourth straight winner on Gold Cup day when Jasmin De Vaux landed the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle. Jasmin De Vaux won the Champion Bumper the previous season but had been beaten on his previous two starts before the Albert Bartlett. He relished the step up to 3m, though, and scored by two and a half lengths under Paul Townend.
